Mastering is the last, and most often overlooked step in the production process. It is the process of optimizing each song on a project so that they all hit with maximum force, while still sounding like they belong together as a group. Mastering may include adjustments in gain and dynamics as well as sequencing the tracks in order for a release. Many artists confuse mastering with mixing. If your mix does not sound good, mastering is not usually the place to fix it. The rule we like to tell our clients is that you should be delivering your final mixed tracks to mastering already satisfied with how they sound. Mastering is simply the tweeking of a finished record. It can rarely save a poor recording or mix.
